“Goddamn it,” Liam said. “I think that"s the same van that tried to grab Maks

in the souk.”

The bus driver cursed in Arabic and looked behind them. Aidan turned around

and saw a khaki-colored pickup truck come to a stop behind them. Four men armed

with rifles spilled out of the back.

“Shit. Look behind us,” Aidan whispered to Liam.

“It"s an ambush. We"ve got to play it cool, though.”

Two more armed men got out of the van and ran up to the bus door. One of

them, tall and dark-haired, rapped his handgun against the glass door. Aidan felt

his pulse rate accelerate.

“What is going on?” Madame Abboud demanded in Arabic, abandoning her

English-only policy. “Do not open that door.”

The driver shook his head at the gunman, who stepped back, and aimed his

gun at the glass door. With a loud bang the glass shattered, and kids on the bus

began to scream.

“What can we do?” Aidan whispered to Liam.

“Damn it, we should have insisted on taking Maks in the SUV. There are too

many kids in front of us now. I"d never get a clear shot. You were right about that

this morning.”

The lead gunman knocked the door open, and Madame Abboud shrieked at

him.

“Quiet!” he shouted in Arabic. Aidan could tell his accent was rough, but he

didn"t know why. Madame Abboud cowered back in her seat, and the kids quieted

themselves to whimpers.

Aidan felt sweat breaking out on his forehead and his back. Carefully he

pulled his cell phone from his pocket. He didn"t know the phone number for the local

police, though; that was a detail they had overlooked in their planning.

“Where is Maksat Bazarov?” the gunman demanded again in Arabic.

Aidan could see Liam evaluating his chances for a shot, but it was clear that

none would be available. There were so many men outside that even if he shot the

man at the front of the bus, his comrades would surely respond. There would be

bloodshed, innocent teenagers hurt and possibly killed.

Aidan looked forward to where Maks sat, and saw him slowly raise his hand.

He was sitting halfway back in the bus, in an aisle seat.

“You come with me,” the gunman said.

Maks looked around. Aidan could see fear in his eyes, but he felt helpless to do

anything to help the kid. From the energy rising off Liam like a fever, he could tell

his partner felt the same way.

Maks turned back toward the front of the bus and began walking down the

aisle. “No, Maks, don"t go,” Ayesha said. “They will hurt you.”

Maks hesitated, and the gunman barked again. “Now!”
